Protein Deficiency Symptoms and Causes

 What is Protein Deficiency?

 Protein is an important component and requirement for the growth and development of our body, which helps in various body activities such as building bones and muscles, building blood and skin, and building tissues.  Protein is present in everyday food items like milk, meat, fish, eggs, soy, legumes, etc., and according to experts, a healthy person should consume between 46 to 56 grams of protein in a day.




 Protein is a very important element for a healthy body.  It acts as a building block for our muscles, skin, enzymes, and hormones.  Not only this, it also acts as an essential in the formation of all body tissues.  In such a situation, when there is not enough protein intake according to the need of the body, then it is called Protein Deficiency.




 Causes of protein deficiency :

 trouble eating or eating disorder

 lack of education about diet

 Taking certain types of medicines, which inhibits the absorption of nutrients by the body.

 Any medical condition that increases your body’s need for calories.

 drought/famine

 living in poverty

 kidney disease

 long-term alcoholism

 Inadequate feeding – not properly breastfeeding a child below 1 year of age.

 A burn or other wound that causes an abnormal loss of protein from the body.




 Symptoms of Protein Deficiency:

 Stomach growing.

 Fatigue and irritability.

 Swelling and swelling of the skin.

 Broken nail or bad nail.

 Swelling and red rash on the skin.

 Difficulty in growing children or not increasing in height.

 Dry or weak hair that breaks easily and loses its color.

 Repeated exposure to an infection or being vulnerable to a severe or prolonged infection.

 Muscle weakness.  When you do not get enough protein through diet, your body gets protein from vital tissues and bones to keep the body running properly.  Muscles get damaged over a period of time due to getting protein from bones.
